Named after the dramatic karst landscape that defines the Burren, this 90km route is the heart of Bark & Ride. You'll tackle meaningful climbs, sweep through exposed limestone plateaus, and descend to the Atlantic coast before climbing back inland. A proper test with proper rewards.
The signature climb of this route — a winding ascent through hazel woodland with increasingly dramatic views over Galway Bay.
The route hugs the coast through Ballyvaughan before rounding the wild, windswept headland at Black Head.
A testing climb up through the heart of the Burren's lunar landscape, with the Aillwee Cave system hidden in the hillside.
Undulating with two significant climbs: Corkscrew Hill (Category 3, 2.5km at 7%) and the Aillwee approach (3km at 5%). Several shorter sharp rises along the coastal section. Total elevation gain approximately 1,100m.
Pace yourself on Corkscrew Hill — it comes at around the 45km mark and you'll want energy for the return leg.
The coastal stretch from Ballyvaughan to Black Head can be very exposed to Atlantic winds. Tuck in behind other riders if you can.
Make full use of the three food stops — proper fuelling is the difference between enjoying the last 20km and surviving it.
Carry a spare tube and know how to change it. The limestone roads can be rough on tyres.
